The time of THE COLD WARRIORS is in that twilight era between the setting sun of the diesel powered submarine and the dawn of nuclear powered propulsion, when there were more diesel boats than nukes. Significant technological changes in warfare have never been simple or easy for those involved -- for each epoch has its own set of rules and objectives. New technology is only as good as the men who apply it. Therefore, THE COLD WARRIORS is not a novel completely about technology, but it is also about a submarine and, as in all submarines, the crew which " ... formed a symbiosis among her mass of steel, machinery, and weapons which gave her life ... " Submariners who turn these pages will catch glimpses of themselves in the characters, or recognize someone which they have ridden with in a submarine; and the old timers will understand that the events have changed, from their time, because the objectives were different. Ever mindful of the sacrifices of the WW II submariners, THE COLD WARRIORS is the story of those men who rode in submarines during the Cold War; who prepared both mentally and physically to fight the boat, knowing that if they had to return fire -- their mission had not succeeded. The fact is that the mentality of the submariner has never changed in his quest for excellence; but the U.S. Navy has now completed the transition from old to new, from obsolete to modern, and from how it was to how it is. THE COLD WARRIORS is a novel written for submariners to strengthen the threads of understanding in the bond which ties all submariners together as comrades in arms.

"This was a last bastion of camaraderie ... this totally masculine environment where there was no middle ground of excuse for mediocrity. Here everything was in absolute terms: the best, the worst, the biggest, the horniest, the foulest, the fastest, and the deepest ... "

PROLOGUE: (From THE COLD WARRIORS)

THE “COLD WAR” IS OVER, and we have won.

Communism had enslaved the countries of Eastern Europe for over a generation; now the entire world, even the leaders of those long-suffering captive peoples, recognize their system as the political and economic flop of this century. The United States’ policy of containment and isolation of Soviet Russia and her satellite countries and captive nations has given democracy and capitalism an astounding victory. The Russians and their commonwealth states, vestiges of the Soviet “Evil Empire,” sue for arms reductions and beg for the scraps from our capitalistic table. All is right with freedom-loving people everywhere as they revel in their triumph over those who would deny others the right to be free.

We have won — but have all the battles ended? Did we successfully conclude all the Cold War confrontations with the former Soviets? Did we force our will upon them by the strength of our resolve and our arms?

In Greece? Yes.
In Turkey? Yes.
In West Berlin? Yes. In the Middle East? Yes.
In Eastern Europe? Yes.

Then what about Cuba?

Although written for submariners, all non-qualified persons with an abiding interest in submarining are welcome aboard. Clear the Bridge!!

This book is a work of fiction. The characters and events, except those actual events recorded as history, are fictional and any resemblance to persons either living, or dead is purely coincidental. However, before there was a submarine launched thermonuclear ballistic missile, there was a submarine launched thermonuclear Regulus guided missile. There were special submarines which carried them on Regulus Missile Deterrent Patrols. One of these submarines was the nuclear powered USS HALIBUT (SSGN-587), the only one of her kind ever built. This boat, with her single crew, set standards of excellence and endurance, to which the dual-crewed Polaris and Trident submarines can only aspire. To them- Godspeed and Good Hunting.
