Wall of Remembrance
"Lest They Be Forgotten ... " |
Shipmates lost during the month of January
Serving one's country in the military service is a dangerous business.
During wartime, when someone is actively trying to cause your death, it is more dangerous.
There is a common bond shared by individuals who share this danger. It is an inherent duty
of those individuals to remember that some of their number have not survived the danger.
In the words of Abraham Lincoln, they have given the
" ... last full measure of devotion."
The United States Naval Submarine Force has suffered grievous losses at the hands of enemies of the United States and in the arms of the sea. We have lost whole submarines and their entire crews. We have lost individual shipmates, friends, relatives. It is well that we should remember them for it makes us more aware of the bond that we have: the dangers we faced, the dangers our shipmates continue to face and of the sacrifice we have not yet been called on to make.
A first step toward insuring that our shipmates are not forgotten is to
list their names.
The "Wall of Remembrance" is a list of those shipmates who have:
In short, those listed gave the "last full measure of devotion" while doing their duty.
The list here is incomplete and may contain errors. It is the best
present effort of a very many people. Active research is ongoing to include shipmates from
several major time periods. If anyone thinks a name needs added, changed or deleted,
please do not hesitate to contact me,
Jim Christley.
In particular we are looking for individual members who died in individual incidents.
Please include supporting information. It is my sincere hope that any additions
to the list be for deaths that have already occured.
