A report from the Government Accountability Office released on September 7 says that the Department of Homeland Security needs to improve some of its policies related to cyber security.
Cyber security, for both governments and power utilities, has become a hot button issue as the threat of a cyber attack appears to increase by the day. Indeed, the Stuxnet virus that immobilized 20 percent of Iran's computers connected with the country's nuclear program demonstrated the need for increased cyber security measures.
"The department has more to do to ensure that it conducts its missions efficiently and effectively, while simultaneously preparing to address future challenges that face the department and the nation," GAO comptroller general Eugene Dodaro said in a statement, reports the Washington Post.
While the government needs to be vigilant about cyber threats, so too must electric utilities. SUBNET Solutions offers a number of items that can help utilities achieve these ends by allowing for substation automation and other improvements that can help protect them while at the same time making operations more streamlined.
