As part of its coordinated action plan, the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) announced it has also created a Cyber Attack Task Force (CATF).
The new force will observe and analyze the impacts coordinated cyber attacks can have on a bulk power system's reliability. An earlier report that NERC conducted established that creating an organization such as the task force, along with NERC initiatives, would be the best way to handle attacks.
In addition, the Cyber Attack Task Force will seek to enhance the current protection the system has, as well as augment any resilience and recovery capabilities within the power system's operations and practices. The force will also look to enhance the tools and systems that operators use to manage the bulk power systems' operation.
"Operators are trained to spot anomalies and take the appropriate actions in real time," said Mark Engels, the direction of IT risk management at Dominion. "The Cyber Attack Task Force will build on that existing knowledge with recommendations that make it easier to detect and respond to indicators of an organized attack."
In all, the force will consist of more than 40 volunteers.
