According to a recent survey, 60 percent of major utility companies have begun outsourcing their meter data management systems (MDMS) in order to increase efficiency. Another recent article from The Energy Collective explains that this could signal greater outsourcing among the smart grid and its connected utilities.
The smart grid allows companies to better manage their operations through real-time analysis of equipment and, building performance and electricity consumption. However, in doing this, utilities are responsible for the proper collection, management and intelligence-related processes, which can often prove daunting because of new technologies.
Thus, as these connected utilities continue their MDMS and integration of substation and feeder supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and outage management systems (OMS), having reliable and efficient solutions becomes a necessity. Furthermore, the sheer volume of data obtained from these technologies can become overwhelming, which leads to the need for expert organization and management. As a result, outsourcing to third-party vendors for the smart grid could soon become a widescale reality.
Furthermore, as cyber security becomes increasingly important in the energy sector, having a reliable third-party vendor for protection will also look more attractive.
