Pike Research's Smart Grid Deployment Tracker found that in the fourth quarter of 2011, smart grid and smart meter deployments continued at a moderate pace.
The report states that large ongoing projects in North America and China supported strong demand for meter shipments, with a total of nearly 73 million shipments from vendors around the world. Compared to 3Q, meter deployment was down 8 percent, mostly due to the completion of some projects and few large projects coming to market.
Total shipments reached 17.8 million in 4Q, with much of the activity stemming from shipments from China.
The report found medium-sized and smaller utilities in the U.S. have started to deploy smart grid technologies, in addition to the larger utilities in the country. In North Carolina, one utility installed a new AMI system that will support a network of 35,000 customers in a seven-county area surrounding Raleigh.
With the rise of more smart grid deployments, many utilities are turning to SUBNET for solutions regarding substation communications, visualization and control, IED access control security and asset monitoring information. SUBNET also helps ensure NERC CIP compliance by leveraging existing utility assets.
