Across the globe, countries are beginning to see the multitude of benefits generated by the smart grid, as intelligent technology has made its way into the electricity industry and is being used to effectively confront issues in distribution from power plants to consumers.
According to the Korea Times, the smart grid revolution will save costs for utilities and increase the use of renewable energy sources. As more sources of energy come online they will need to be managed by large amounts of disparate technology to match electricity supply with demand in real time.
South Korea has seen an especially impressive smart grid rollout.
"Smart grids are being found everywhere. Governments and firms are busy investing more on them. The key point is that the market is growing and Korea is taking on a bigger role," said Park Geun-min, a smart grid expert.
As more systems are used in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity, utilities will need to configure thousands of substation passwords to maintain security. With SUBNET's Unified IED Access Control Security, utilities can experience simple, secure remote access to field intelligent electronic devices, while complying with both internal IT and legislated cyber security policies.
