The IEEE is a non-profit, professional organization that develops international standards. The IEEE Standards Association has a portfolio of some 900 active standards and more than 400 standards in development. This includes the prominent IEEE 802 (Ethernet) standards for wireless networking.
The IEEE name was originally an acronym for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. Today, the organization's scope of interest has expanded into so many related fields, that it is simply referred to by the letters IEEE, and has become an acronym.
