SUBNET Training at DistribuTECH 2017
Join us for a special SUBNET Training Event at DistribuTECH 2017! We will be hosting a full day of professional training workshops at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego on Monday, January 30.
Both workshops will be facilitated by Andrew West, Regional Technical Director at SUBNET Solutions and Chair of the DNP Technical Committee. Andrew has 35 years of experience with electric utility SCADA, having working for utilities, product manufacturers and software providers.
He has been involved with DNP3 and the equivalent IEC SCADA standards for over 20 years. He has been monitoring the development of IEC 61850 since its first incarnation as UCA and has participated directly in the IEC working group for the past five years.

Workshop Descriptions
An Overview of IEEE 1815 (DNP3)
DNP3 is widely used in the North American electricity network and in other SCADA applications, but it isn’t always set up to perform at its best.
This workshop highlights the features of DNP3, discusses the principles of its operation and explains how it is intended to be used. Participants will gain an understanding of how to configure DNP3 to operate simply and effectively with maximum interoperability and how to interpret vendor’s DNP3 documentation.
This workshop is intended for utility staff who need to design, implement and maintain control systems. It is also suitable for system and device vendors seeking clarity in understanding the paradigms of DNP3 usage.
Integrating DNP3 and IEC 61850
The introduction of an IEC 61850 substation automation system into a utility typically requires the inclusion of a gateway for communication between that system the control center SCADA master. A new standard, IEEE 1815.1, was published in December of 2016 describing how to consistently (and automatically) map between IEC 61850 and IEEE 1815 (DNP3).
This workshop introduces the concepts and methods described in this new standard. The workshop will review the principles by which both DNP3 and IEC 61850 manage their data and how these two worlds can interact with each other.

The workshop does not require familiarity with technical details of IEC 61850 or DNP3, but participants who already possess this knowledge will gain additional insight. The workshop is intended for utilities, integrators or vendors who are investigating or implementing IEC 61850 in North America or other locations where DNP3 is used.
